Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
