This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but inside Together exists a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple confront the sort of issues that come with long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
