Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies represent an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Between the US and Europe

The data paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
